Jiang Shumei, 87, an illiterate granny who learned how to read at age 60, has painted more than 300 paintings and published 6 books, realizing a stunning transformation in her twilight years.
Born in Ju County of China's Shandong Province in 1937, Jiang lives in Suihua City of China's Heilongjiang Province currently. In 1996, Jiang's husband died in a traffic accident. In order to relieve Jiang's grief, her daughter Zhang Ailing started teaching Jiang to read. Since 2012, Jiang has begun writing with Zhang's help and encouragement.
“I never thought I could be a writer,” Jiang said. The sufferings she had experienced in life became the inspiration for her stories. Jiang's compositions were posted on the Internet by her daughter who is also a writer, then she got the opportunity to publish a book.
Since April 2013, Jiang's articles have been published on magazines. In October that year, she published her first work Poor Time, Troubled Time. In 2015, she became a member of the China Writers Association.
In addition to writing, Jiang learned painting and calligraphy. “I want to be four kinds of masters, an author, a painter, a calligrapher, and a granny,” she said proudly.
Keeping writing, doing exercises and eating a healthy diet, Jiang maintains regular and good habits, “I will strive to live to 130 years old,” she said.
38. The underlined word “illiterate” in paragraph one probably means
39. Why did Jiang Shumei's daughter teach her to read?
40. What was Jiang Shumei's inspiration for writing?
41. When was her book Poor Time, Troubled Time published?
42. What's the main idea of the passage?
Task 2 Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:
Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon Rainforest covers 6 million square kilometers of jungle and river and expands over eight countries, half of it being in the country of Brazil. It is home to millions of species of vegetation and animals, some of which are still being discovered today. It is also the world's largest supplier of oxygen and is a treasure chest for medical researchers who are experimenting with different plants in hope of finding cures for diseases like cancer and AIDS.
However, the world is at risk of losing this rich rainforest because of deforestation caused by the actions of loggers, farmers and settlers. The Amazon Basin has lost 20% of its rainforest since 1970. Cattle farmers have continuously cleared the land for cows to graze on, and crop farmers have begun to “slash and burn”, a farming method that involves cutting down forests and burning the land to make it suitable for agricultural purposes. The problem with doing this in the Amazon, however, is that the soil is not rich enough to support multiple harvests. Therefore, it is often unusable after a year, resulting in dried-out land where lush rainforest once stood. Loggers have been cutting down trees for timber, and settlers have been intruding on the land, further diminishing its size.
One reason that the shrinkage of the Amazon causes such alarm is because it is the world's largest absorber of carbon dioxide, recycling it into oxygen and clean air for us to breathe. With the continuous destruction of the Amazon Rainforest, global warming becomes more of a threat. It is up to each individual to protest the destruction of the Amazon by refusing to purchase any of the food that is grown on the lands that used to be rainforests. Also, people can make their voices heard by contacting political leaders and voicing their concerns about this environmental disaster.
43. Why is Amazon Rainforest regarded as "treasure chest" by medical researchers?
44. What is not the result of crop farmers' cutting forests and burning the land?
45. According to the last paragraph, the main importance of the Amazon is because
46. According to the author
47. The point of this article is to demonstrate that the Amazon Rainforest
Task 3 Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:
Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real-time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We've used this on our video calls. Similar progress has been made in spatial audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren't we all wearing smart glasses yet? So far, no one has invented a good way to send images of our world on to glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
48. Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1?
49. What are Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?
50. To invent smart glasses, ______ needs to be improved
51. Which of the following statements is an opinion?
52. How might the writer feel about the future of smart glasses?
Task 4 Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:
Huo Tingxiao's award-winning films are household names representing Chinese productions globally. As a film production designer, he has worked with many of the most renowned Chinese directors, with the combined box office of his films reaching 20 billion yuan ($2.75 billion). More importantly, his artistic creations have visualized Chinese culture for a global audience.
Having won five Golden Rooster Awards for production design, the top Chinese film award, Huo is the most decorated production designer in the country. With more than 30 years of career and numerous awards to his name, Huo told the Global Times that he has been dedicated to the artistic pursuit of “spreading the beauty of Chinese culture,” which has been a key to his achievements.
Cinematic visual art
While the 1994 film Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker won him his first Golden Rooster Award, it was the 2002 film Hero, directed by Zhang Yimou, that has made his name internationally, with the unique colors representing each of the main characters, creating a highly stylized visual feast.
In recent years, Huo has participated in production of dozens of films, including the popular “neo-mainstream” films, covering a wide range of genres including realism and historical epics. Despite the variety of stories, Huo said producers can always find ways to fulfill the pursuit of spreading “beauty” in visual production design.
In a recent event at a lush Beijing hutong courtyard, film admirers packed the venue to hear Huo's sharing of his insights on artistic production despite the sultry summer weather.
Huo shared insights into the creative process behind the scenic design of several ancient-themed films, highlighting the blend of historical accuracy and artistic imagination that defines his work. His innovative design concepts have contributed to the visual storytelling of some of China's most iconic movies. When asked about his approach to designing sets for films like The Emperor and the Assassin, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of the Golden Flower, Huo explained the nuanced process of integrating historical elements with creative liberties. He emphasized that while the initial inspiration for these designs comes from artifacts, paintings, and literature, the actual design process allows for a significant amount of creative freedom and imagination.
Huo highlighted the differences in world-building across films directed by Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, noting the distinct narrative and aesthetic choices that influence the design of each project. For instance, Zhang's Hero and Chen's The Emperor and the Assassin, though based on the same story, present contrasting approaches to realism and commercial cinema, respectively. This distinction extends to the setting of their films, with “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower” both being set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), showcasing vibrant and ostentatious colors and rich designs.
The art director's work on these films demonstrates a deep respect for historical accuracy while also pushing the boundaries of traditional set design. By carefully selecting and reimagining elements from the Tang Dynasty for House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower, Huo has created visually stunning environments that enhance the storytelling and bring the ancient world to life in a way that resonates with modern audiences.
Transforming film design
Huo's contribution to the film industry has not only set a high standard for historical set design but has also shown the importance of balancing factual representation with artistic innovation. His work continues to inspire a new generation of designers and filmmakers to explore the rich possibilities of combining history with imagination in their creative endeavors.
“A makeup artist dresses up the characters, while production designers dress up the entire movie on silver screen,” Huo said, which is why the work is important.
Huo shared that the expanse and richness of Chinese culture has been a limitless source of inspiration for him, and despite having achieved unparalleled recognition in the industry, he keeps studying traditional cultures and benefiting from them.
“But once a style is decided upon, everything else keeps in line with the theme,” he said, praising director Zhang Yimou of always making his stylization of a film to the extreme.
At an era when artificial intelligence is set to transform industries, Huo said movie production design work is also to be greatly changed by AI tools, in three to five years. AI may reduce manpower costs in film making, yet Huo maintains upbeat about this near future, as production-wise, “technology serves artistic creation” and helps handily visualize the imagination of designers, and there always needs humans to appraise and determine what's best for artistic expression.
Tools keep being revolutionized. Art designs for Chinese films only several decades ago used to be simple hand-drawn drafts, said one audience member, who was also a veteran member of the film industry, adding that they look forward to a more culturally charged future of artistic design with the help of AI.
53. What is the key to Huo Tingxiao's numerous awards?

The 2024 Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament was held on the Pearl River in Guangzhou, capital of South China's Guangdong province on Sunday.
As one of the best dragon boat competitions in the world, this year's tournament attracted 111 teams and involved nearly 4,000 competitors. They included 16 international teams from countries including the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and one of the teams was represented by the foreign chambers of commerce in Guangzhou. Also, teams from the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, as well as six neighboring cities including Foshan, Huizhou and Dongguan took part in the annual event.

David Butler, captain of Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Team, said:“This is a great window into local Guangzhou culture, or Cantonese culture. This is a great way to connect with the local community. I love the spirit of dragon boating—a positive, dynamic and enthusiastic spirit.”
The Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament is one of the most anticipated events of this year's dragon boat season in Guangdong. The activity, running more than a month, kicked off on May 18 in Dongguan, marking the start of dragon boat races held across the province.
A traditional custom of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, dragon boat racing is also an intangible cultural heritage item in Guangdong and embodies the region's Lingnan culture. Today, it not only serves as a classic festival activity but a symbol of the spirit of unity, perseverance and struggle for excellence.
Another event of the dragon boat season was a dragon boat drift racing competition held on June 8 in Diejiao village, Nanhai district, Foshan city.
